The bottom line is that cash gives people a sense financial stability during times of insecurity. It also offers citizens an undeniable sense of privacy and an escape from incessant scrutiny, something that can become a serious issue if a government turns tyrannical.

Because, as much as cards and digital payments might be gaining in popularity across the globe, cash has unique attributes that simply cannot be equaled. As Member of the Executive Board of the ECB, Yves Mersch wisely stated during the 2018 Bargeldsymposium: “Alternative payment methods cannot replace euro cash; they can only complement it”.
