2017 RETROSPECTIVE REFERENCES
What have we learned in 2017? That cash can contribute to keeping a healthy waistline by helping us avoid impulsive purchases, but that it’s also the easiest payment method for many people, including Indians that were forced to switch to cashless payments after an overnight demonitisation scheme. Indeed, cash is so accessible and universal, that some of the internet’s biggest giants are now turning to it to expand their business reach. After Amazon, it was the turn for Square and Uber to include cash in their business expansion strategies. The year 2017 is unfortunately also a synonym to a number of natural disasters. Thankfully, the best of the human spirit comes out during hard times, and people have come forth in many ways to offer some aid and support. But that’s not all. In a world where peace unfortunately does not yet reign, cash turns out to be one of the most efficient humanitarian relief solutions, to the point that even the OECD wrote a practical guide for humanitarian professionals.
For CashEssentials, the end of this year was also the occasion to welcome a new partner onboard: the International Security Ligue. We are looking forward to our collaboration in 2018 with many new projects are in the pipeline, so stay tuned!
And last but not least, the European Central Bank has finally made the study of The Use of Cash by Households in the Euro Area public, showing that 79% of point-of-sale transactions are made in cash.
What a year!
