Waracle Marketing Director, Sharon Dickie and Head of Mobile at Travelex, Adam Warburton, looked at the 7 traditional arguments used in favour of cash and compared them to mobile payments.

The 7 arguments are the following:

  1. Cash is the most available and reliable payment method
  2. Physical cash has a more stable “value” than electronic cash
  3. Cash usage is linked to older generations
  4. Small transactions will always be done with cash
  5. Cash is anonymous and untraceable
  6. “Developing” countries rely on cash
  7. Cash equals greater budgeting control

The use of mobile payment apps is growing but it is currently evolving in parallel to other payment methods including cash and cards.
