The Russian central bank recently declared that more than 2 billion rubles ($31 million) have been stolen from correspondent accounts held by commercial banks. A spokesperson explained that 5 billion rubles were originally targeted, but 3 billion were saved.

According to preliminary information, the fraudsters exploited the Swift messaging service to fake client credentials and send fraudulent messages. As a reminder, the same stratagem had been already used to steel the record amount of $81 million from the central bank of Bangladesh last May.

Russia also suspects that the cyberattacks might come from foreign spy agencies willing to destabilize its banking system.
