Improving health and nutrition through cash transfer projects

Cash transfer pilot project has proven beneficial to women, children but also to local health centres.

Thanks to the Cambodia Cash Transfer pilot project – which offers cash transfers or bonuses to women that participate in health workshops and make use of pre-natal health services – 1,500 households have seen their health and nutrition significantly improve. The pilot was carried out over a year from May 2015 until May 2016.

In a country where malnutrition affects 40% of children under 5 years of age and where less than a quarter of the poorest women receive antenatal care, this project has not only helped to better inform women about the importance of hygiene in the household, it has also allowed many families to provide three meals per day to their children, improving their overall health.

But the benefits have also had a positive effect on local health centres. More services offered equal to more cash inflow and greater incentives for health centre employees.
