The Federal government is encouraging the popuation to stockpile food for 10 days, water for five days as well as cash. Medical supplies, bankets and extra batteries should also be stored.

This is the first major update of Germany’s civil defense strategy since the Cold War ; it was presented to the parliament by the Interior Minister on 24 August 2016 according to German paper F.A.Z. The paper states it cannot rule out a major security threat that would require these emergency reserves.

In the US, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends to include cash in an emergency supply kit as does the American Red Cross.
