The humanitarian sector is shifting towards cash

GiveDirectly is a non-profit organisation which has donated over $50 million in cash to poor people in Kenya and Uganda. The money is sent using mobile money transfers such as M-Pesa.

This reflects a fundamental shift in an industry, where the majority of donations are in the form of aid or goods; cash represents between 2 and 6% of global humanitarian spending which amounted to $1.2 billion in 2014.

According to the founders of GiveDirectly, cash presents several advantages.

There is resistance from within the industry as many believe it is better to send aid in the form goods rather than cash. However, according to Andrew Natsios, former head of USAID “if we move from 6% to 25%, or 40 or 50%, that makes a mot more sense. So, I think moving incrementally toward cash is the answer.”
