UAE inaugurate their first banknote printing plant

The UAE inaugurated their first banknote printing facility this March. Previously, dirhams were printed in France and the UK.

The UAE officially opened their first banknote printing facility in early March. The plant is operated by Oumolat Security Printing Company and is located in the Khalifa industrial zone of Abu Dhabi.

The inauguration was made in presence of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister of the country, who received the first 1,000 dirham banknote bearing the number « 1 ». The central bank governor Mubarak Rashed al Mansoori was present to receive the Sheik and show the facility’s equipment and latest technologies. 

So far, the UAE’s banknotes were printed in France and the UK while coins are still produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Oumolat Security Printing aims to provide printing services to other central banks of the Middle East in the future.
