Swiss banks are currently developing a standardised operating system to be implemented in all ATMs across the country. The common software platform – named ATMfutura – will be operated by Swiss payment solutions provider SIX offering consumers a single interface with new functionalities for a consistent and pleasant user experience.

Indeed, the enhanced ATM platform will include functions such as cardless withdrawals via a smartphone, cash deposits into selected accounts including those denominated in euros and the option to choose specific banknote denominations. In addition, a talking functionality will allow the visually impaired to enjoy these same services.

ATMfutura will replace the 20 different systems currently in operation. The standardised system will reduce banks’ workload by providing centralised and outsourced management and monitoring functions, including installation, evaluation and refill of cash machines. Credit Suisse already installed the pilot system in one of its ATMs at a Zurich branch, and other banks should follow suit in the coming months.
