The rise has sparked interest from speculators and investors in search of quick profits in times of economic uncertainty. In the case of bitcoin, consensus is achieved by a method called “Proof-of-Work” (PoW), where computers (or miners) on the network compete with each other to solve a complex mathematical puzzle. Once the puzzle is solved, the latest “block” of transactions is approved and added to the “chain” of transactions. The first miner to solve the puzzle is rewarded with new bitcoins and network transaction fees. The energy use of the bitcoin network is therefore both a security feature and a side effect of relying on the ever-increasing computing power of competing miners to validate transactions through PoW.
In 2017, it was estimated that a single Bitcoin transaction would require as much energy as the weekly consumption of an average American household. Three years later, the energy demand is three times higher and this has become a serious concern due to its impact on global warming. A new study by Alex de Vries, a blockchain expert at PwC and founder of Digiconomist.net, finds that a conservative estimate of the annual electrical energy consumption of Bitcoin amounts to 87.1 TWh as per September 2019, equaling the energy consumption of a country like Belgium.
The Digiconomist website provides a Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index with real-time data on the estimated energy consumption and environmental impact. It estimates that the footprint of a single Bitcoin transaction generates over 300 kgCO2 (equivalent kilos of carbon dioxide) and requires 633 kWh of electricity or the equivalent to the power consumption of an American household for 21 days.
The cost of electricity is monitored carefully by crypto-miners as it constitutes approximately 60% of the operating costs. As a result, miners have been heading to countries offering low-price – and not necessarily – low-emission electricity as well as cool temperatures (in colder environments, less energy is needed to cool the servers). China remains the largest hub but countries Canada, Iceland, Georgia, Sweden and the US attracting more and more companies. De Vries concludes that “the bigger the profitability of mining, the more it allows market participants to make decisions that result in suboptimal power efficiency of the Bitcoin network.” It is also important to realise that Bitcoin is just one cryptocurrency amongst many, and that they all consume electricity and leave a carbon footprint.
