In December 2020, the Global Cash Community joined forces in an initiative called HUMANIA to support the people who have been most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. HUMANIA launched a currency design initiative, inviting designers to capture a moment from the pandemic and depict it in banknotes or coins.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the 1st truly global crisis. Beyond the loss of life, there are numerous far-reaching consequences such as human seclusion, suffering, economic distress and a sense of helplessness. The Global Cash Community has joined forces to develop an initiative called HUMANIA that aims to support the people in society who have been most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in their efforts to recover and rebuild.

Using data from a continuous household consumption survey, economists Renuka Sane and Ajay Shah analyse both the levels of household borrowing as well as the sources of lending. They conclude that fewer households borrow but more rely on family and friends as well as shops.

As cash payments have been declining during the pandemic, due to reduced economic activity and a shift towards online and contactless payments, consumers and citizens are increasingly calling for the right to access cash and its acceptance for payments.

The ATM doesn't just dispense cash, it dispenses value way beyond that of the banknotes it disgorges. They play a pivotal role in disaster risk reduction, poverty alleviation and social protection. But they could do more.
